Real Madrid midfielder Marco Asensio has admitted that he deserved to be dropped to the bench this season after working his way back into Zinedine Zidane‘s plans (English).

The Spain international, who is preparing for friendlies against Germany and Argentina, was used mainly as a substitute at the start of the year despite making a bright start to the campaign.

But after suggestions Zidane had treated him unfairly, Asensio was quick to accept the blame and praise the influence of his manager.

‘That [unfair] is not the word,’ Asensio told El Larguero. ‘Because of issues, he chose others.

‘It was my fault and my responsibility when I was out of the team. The dynamic of the team was not so good and I did not have so many minutes.

‘I wanted to do everything in the 10 minutes I had. In those moments you have to be mentally strong.’

And the 22-year-old believes Los Blancos are now firmly back on track after following a poor run of form over the Christmas period.

‘Now he (Zidane) is giving me confidence,’ he added. ‘I think that both in attack and in defence(Soccer Gear) we are more compact and we have to continue like this and maintain this line. We are in a very good place.’
