Chelsea and Atletico Madrid agreed a deal to take Diego Costa to Spain last month
It has not taken long for Diego Costa’s Atletico Madrid reunion to turn sour as the Brazilian-born striker has already thrown a strop while training at his new club.
Costa had the honour of boasting the most drawn out transfer saga of the entire summer as he sought to leave Chelsea for a return to Atletico, the club he spent four years with before joining the Blues in 2014.
After Antonio Conte informed him by text that he was no longer needed at Stamford Bridge at the end of last season, Costa made it clear that he only had one destination in mind.
But things have not gone so smoothly as the romantic narrative of a returning hero that you might expect. Firstly, the Spanish side’s transfer ban meant Costa cannot play for them until January and this contributed to the saga dragging out into September, past the close of the summer transfer window.
Now that the two sides finally agreed a deal in September ahead of their Champions League clash, the 29-year-old can begin integrating himself into his new team.
But having spent the summer in his native Brazil, ignoring requests from Chelsea to report for pre-season training, Costa is not yet fully fit.
This has led to Costa training by himself in order to get back to the expected level – and it’s a fact the Spain international does not seem happy about.
In a video obtained by AS, Costa can be seen sulking after a coach tells him he must go alone for fitness training while his teammates prepare for a practice match.
Costa argues briefly with the coach before kicking a number of footballs away in frustration.
Still, he collects himself well enough to greet the youth players who have joined the session.
