WHILE the football world has focused on Neymar, then Philippe Coutinho and also Ousmane Dembele, there’s a very important piece of information that has flown under the radar.
Barcelona start this new campaign in disarray and Lionel Messi has not yet renewed his contract.

An agreement had been reached in principle, with the club trumpeting that it would be resolved during pre-season training.
That has come and gone.
The club’s vice president Jordi Mestre said: “It is all agreed and we are waiting for a date for the signing. Everything is in place, with just the signature missing.
“Leo’s renewal is something we are totally clear about and we have worked on it for a long time.

“Everything looks very good and I would be very surprised if the signing didn’t happen.”
But … this is the same man that declared Neymar would “200 per cent” stay at Camp Nou.
The new deal, if signed, would include a £265m release clause and extend until 2021.

Spanish outlet Diario Gol suggest the Argentine wants to see a signing, the ilk of Antoine Griezmann or compatriots Angel di Maria and Paulo Dybala, before putting pen to paper.
To more immediate matters, Borussia Dortmund’s chief executive has joined Jurgen Klopp in making a mockery of Barcelona’s General Manager going public to declare deals for Dembele and Coutinho were ‘close’.

Hans-Joachim Watzke retorted: “I don’t know why he (Segura) said that. Barcelona is not one step closer to signing Dembele.”
He told Kicker magazine: “I can not explain what he is telling me. Maybe it’s because Real played his team dizzy in the Super Cup.”
“Nothing has advanced, not even by a millimetre.”
