Fernando Morientes believes Kylian Mbappe shouldn’t rest on his laurels now he has joined Paris Saint-Germain and prove his worth to Real Madrid.
Before kicking a ball for the French giants, Mbappe was already being criticised based on the price tag alone, with £166million expected to change hands next summer after his loan spell.
But Morientes feels the 18-year-old should focus on proving he is worth the ludicrous sum thrown down by Unai Emery’s club and continue to improve.
He believes his former side, Real Madrid, who were interested in the youngster, are also good suitors for the Frenchman if he impresses at PSG.
‘Of course there’s always so many teams to which players can go,’ Morientes said, who had two spells at Madrid between 1997 and 2005. ‘But at the end of the day, with the great season Real Madrid had, this year they were not in need of hiring too many players.
‘Kylian (Mbappe) has now the possibility to show the world his talent and get better.
‘To play for Real Madrid, you have to be one of the best players. He can prove he has the abilities to play for Real Madrid.’
A statement was made by last season’s Ligue 1 runners-up when they brought the 18-year-old to Paris but Mbappe hit the ground running for PSG, scoring on his debut against FC Metz and making his contribution in PSG’s 5-0 demolition of Celtic in their Champions League opener.
After a summer which they hope set the trend for what’s to come, Morientes also spoke about the French side’s potential for Champions League glory this season.
‘Paris Saint-Germain is clearly one of the favourite candidates to win it,’ he said.
‘However, in order to reach the level Real Madrid is at, at present, you need to not only get good players, but to make them play as a team.
‘So this is the challenge they will have. But definitely, they are one of the main candidates to be champions.’
